Headaches and migraines are unwelcome visitors. Headache sufferers are typically very ready for tips on how to prevent them. Over 50 years of age, sufferers of
migraine, a primary headache, find themselves members of a global
community with migraine being a foremost cause of
disability. (1) Tarrytown Chiropractic offers
some prevention tips and treatment relief suggestions just
for our Tarrytown headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet feeds the body and the mind. Researchers
have noted that migraine triggers come
in a variety of forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary.
A high-quality diet successfully helps manage
migraine. Further, and more expressly, women
with chronic migraine ate a lower diet
quality than that of women with episodic
migraine. (2) A new study was
even more specific with the kind of diet beneficial to
migraine patients, specifically overweight folks. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found
to be preventive of episodic migraines. Effectiveness
was noted within one month of the diet modification.
(3) Tarrytown Chiropractic is not recommending that any
of our patients try a certain type of
diet now! If a Tarrytown headache sufferer wants
to explore a new diet, Tarrytown Chiropractic is here to discuss
and decide which diet (if any special one) is appropriate.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
The same goes for vitamin D supplementation. Vitamin D deficiency has been found
in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities
of vitamin D have opened its supplementation to considered inclusion in the care and prevention of headache and migraine.
One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day reduced
the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug
therapy. More research needs to be completed,
but vitamin D supplementation appears encouraging.

supplementation when appropriate.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all sorts – primary
headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are everyday
complaints brought to the Tarrytown chiropractor. Research reported
that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga),
manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage,
biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was helpful.
More specifically, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care,
some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported helpful
for migraine headache. (4)
